Bhakti Music Academy

The Bhakti Music Academy, was formed in 2005 and officially registered in 2006, when it received the recognition of the Ministry of Education.

During a meeting with His Holiness spiritual master, His Holiness Lokanath Swami in 2004, Venunath Das was asked how he could serve Lord Krishna and His devotees, to which he answered that he had studied music and that was his hobby. Lokanath Swami then replied: “Fine, then start teaching the devotees kirtans, bhajans and music so that they are able to properly sing and dance for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord, Krishna”.

Assisted by his wife, also well-versed in music, Venunath thus started his ongoing devotional service at Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, Bon Acceuil, on Sundays (2 – 4pm), and then at Vrindavan Garden in Sri Sri Radha Golokananda Temple in Phoenix on Saturdays (2.30 – 4.30 pm). Eventually, he started serving at the Rose Belle Sri Sri Gaura Nitai Temple (10 - noon) and recently at 16eme Mile Shivala Hall(1-2.30 pm).

Courses in vocal singing, harmonium, violin and guitar are taught. The music courses include exams and certificate awards. The award ceremony held in April 2005 at the Queen Elizabeth College received laudable and unforgettable success at national level.

In 2005, the association launched an audio CD comprising a collection of most well-known kirtans to commemorate the 108th birthday anniversary of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, Founder-acharya of ISKCON.

The Bhakti Music Academy now has nearly 200 students participating in the service of chanting and spreading the holy name through music, which follows in the spirit of the Sama Veda. They perform during the Janamashtami festivals stage programmes and, with musical logistics, accompany His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami, His Holiness Nava Yogendra Swami, and His Holiness Lokanath Swami Maharaj in programmes at a national level. Last year they accompanied Lokanath Swami Maharaj in Durban to the Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple and this year they again received an invitation to perform in Durban.

The aim of the academy is to open a centre for music and culture to further promote bhakti through music and other spiritual activities. Everyone is welcome to join the association for this spiritual cause.
