Food for Life

Food for Life is the largest pure vegetarian relief programme in the world. It was inspired by Srila Prabhupada who expressed his desire that nobody within 10 miles radius of an ISKCON temple should go hungry.

Since 1974 when the programme started, Food for Life has served many hundreds of millions of vegetarian meals throughout the 60 countries where it has been established. The program includes free food restaurants, mobile kitchens, emergency relief services in war or poverty-stricken zones and distribution of prasadam at festivals.

In Mauritius, Food for Life distributes free prasadam to devotees during the main religious pilgrimages celebrated in the island: Maha-Shivaratri, Ganesh Chaturti, Cavadi, Ganga Snan, pilgrimage for Père Laval. During the Maha-Shivaratri festival at Grand-Bassin, Food for Life is the only NGO serving the pilgrims 24 hours a day for 5 days. 500 000 pilgrims receive hot prasadam and herbal tea during this festival.

Occasional Food for Life programmes are also held in schools, orphanages, old age homes and impoverished suburbs. Funds are raised from donors who regularly support Food for Life Mauritius.
